The Light of God is born as a little Child

LeaderPlease sit for the reading
ReaderIn the gospel of St. John chapter 8 verse 12, Jesus says, "I am the light of the World, whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, he will have the light of life."

In this service we shall see the light of Jesus spread throughout the world and from generation to generation.

We will also be decorating our Christmas tree to remind us of the different ways in which God invites His people to love and serve Him.

This reading is from Luke Chapter 2 verses 1-8.

The Birth of Jesus

At that time the Emperor Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Roman Empire.

Everyone, then, went to register himself, each to his own town.

( Joseph and Mary begin walking down the aisle, Joseph carrying a pack. )
 Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of Bethlehem in Judaea, the birthplace of King David.

Joseph went there because he was a descendant of David. He went to register with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him.

( Joseph and Mary sit by the manger. )
 She was pregnant, and while they were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have her baby. She gave birth to her first son ( Mary picks up baby doll ), wrapped him in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger - there was no room for them to stay in the inn.
LeaderPlease stand to sing the Carol :

Away in a manger

( During this hymn shepherds come down the centre aisle and arrange themselves in front of the altar. )

1.   Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
  The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head;
  The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay,
  The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.

2.   The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
  But little Lord Jesus no crying He makes.
  I love Thee, Lord Jesus ! Look down from the sky,
  And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

3.   Be near me, Lord Jesus : I ask Thee to stay
  Close by me forever, and love me, I pray;
  Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,
  And fit us for heaven to live with Thee there.

The angels proclaim the Light to the shepherds

LeaderPlease sit for the reading.
ReaderThis reading is from Luke Chapter 2 verses 8-18.
( Angels act out story as appropriate. )

The Shepherds and the Angels

 There were some shepherds in that part of the country who were spending the night in the fields, taking care of their flocks.
( Angel of the Lord comes from behind altar; other angels remain hidden. )
 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone over them. They were terribly afraid, but the angel said to them,
Angel of the LordDon't be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people.

This very day in David's town your Saviour was born - Christ the Lord! And this is what will prove it to you : you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a manger.

( Angels appear from behind altar, and Angel of the Lord goes into the centre. )
ReaderSuddenly a great army of heaven's angels appeared with the angel, singing praises to God :
Angels togetherGlory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased!
AngelWe place this symbol on the tree to remind us that the angel was the first to speak the Good News of Jesus's birth.
( Angel shows the symbol and Tree Attendant places it on the tree.

Tree operator raises tree.

Angels dance down the centre aisle and Helper lights their lights. )

Reader - and so the angels carried the light to the shepherds.

The shepherds said to one another,

Shepherds all together "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has told us."
( Shepherds go to the manger by moving out of sanctuary on organ side, crossing over in front of altar rail and so to the manger. )
ReaderSo they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and saw the baby lying in the manger.

When the shepherds saw him, they told them what the angel had said about the child. All who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said.

ShepherdWe place this symbol on the tree to remind us that the shepherds were the first to go to the stable to worship Jesus.
( Shepherd shows symbol to congregation and Tree Attendant places it on the tree;

Tree operator raises tree;

Shepherds return rejoicing down organ side aisle, and one shepherd turns their lights on. )

Reader Mary remembered all these things and thought deeply about them. The shepherds went back, singing praises to God for all they had heard and seen, it had been just as the angel had told them.

 - and so the shepherds carried the light to the people.

LeaderPlease stand to sing the Carol :

While shepherds watched ...

( During this hymn the manger is "hidden" and two chairs put in centre in front of altar, by Joseph. Mary now has toddler doll, Joseph has pack, both sitting in front of altar on the chairs. )

1.   While shepherds watched their flocks by night,
  All seated on the ground,
  The angel of the Lord came down
  And glory shone around

2.   "Fear not," said he ( for mighty dread
  Had seized their troubled mind ),
  "Glad tidings of great joy I bring
  To you and all mankind.

3.   To you in David's town this day
  Is born of David's line
  A Saviour, Who is Christ the Lord;
  And this shall be the sign :

4.   The heavenly Babe you there shall find
  To human view displayed,
  All meanly wrapped in swathing bands,
  And in a manger laid.

5.   Thus spake the seraph : and forthwith
  Appeared a shining throng
  Of angels praising God, who thus
  Addressed their joyful song :

6.   "All glory be to God on high,
  And to the earth be peace;
  Good will henceforth from heaven to men
  Begin and never cease.
"

The Light begins to spread through the world

LeaderPlease sit for the readings.
ReaderThis reading is from Matthew Chapter 2 verses 1-12.

Wise men come to find Jesus

Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judaea, during the reign of King Herod. Soon afterwards some men who studied the stars came from the east to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the baby born to be king of the Jews ? We saw his star when it came up in the east and we have come to worship him."

King Herod was deeply disturbed by their question and all Jerusalem was filled with rumours. He called a meeting of the Jewish Religious leaders, and asked them, "Where will the Messiah be born ?"

"In the town of Bethlehem in Judaea", they answered.

So Herod called the wise men from the East to a secret meeting and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem.

( Wise men come down centre aisle and present their gifts, while the next paragraph is read. )
 And so they left, and on their way they saw the same star they had seen in the east. When they saw it, how happy they were, what joy was theirs! It went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. They went into the house, and when they saw the child with his mother Mary, they knelt down and worshipped him. They brought out their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and presented them to him.
( After the gifts have been presented - )
Wise manWe place this symbol on the tree to remind us that the wise men travelled a long way in their search for Jesus.
( Wise man shows symbol to people and Tree Attendant puts it on the tree;

Tree operator raises tree;

Wise men return to back down lectern side aisle and put their lights on. )

ReaderThen they returned to their country by another road, since God had warned them in a dream to go home another way.

 - and so the wise men carried the light to their country.

This reading is taken from Matthew Chapter 2 verses 13-15.

Joseph and Mary flee to Egypt.

After they were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up and flee to Egypt with the baby and his mother," the angel said, "and stay there until I tell you to return, for King Herod is going to try to kill the child."

( Mary and Joseph pack up and leave down organ side aisle. )
 That same night he left for Egypt with Mary and the child, and stayed there until King Herod's death.

Please stand to sing the Carol :

As with gladness men of old ...

( Helper to remove chairs from in front of altar; all costumes to be removed by end of this hymn. )

1.   As with gladness men of old
  Did the guiding star behold,
  As with joy they hailed its light,
  Leading onward, beaming bright;
  So, most gracious Lord, may we
  Evermore be led to Thee.

2.   As with joyful steps they sped,
  Saviour, to Thy lowly bed,
  There to bend the knee before
  Thee who heaven and earth adore;
  So may we with willing feet
  Ever seek Thy mercy-seat.

3.   As they offered gifts most rare
  At Thy cradle rude and bare,
  So may we with holy joy,
  Pure and free from sins alloy,
  All our costliest treasures bring,
  Christ, to Thee our heavenly King.

Jesus is the Light of the world

LeaderPlease sit for the reading.
ReaderThis reading is from John Chapter 1 verses 1-5 and 9-14.

The Word of Life

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.

Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognise him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God - children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

The Word became flesh and lived for a while among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

LeaderIn the gospel of St. John chapter 8 verse 12, Jesus says, "I am the light of the World, whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, he will have the light of life."

Please stand to sing the Hymn :

I am the light of the world

( All actors go to front and sit in front of altar. )

The Light passes down through the ages

LeaderPlease sit for the first play. During the plays we invite you to join in with "The Crowd" parts.

I : THE DISCIPLES

LeaderThis is the story of THE DISCIPLES.

After the death of Jesus and His resurrection it is up to His followers, the disciples, and all who have dedicated themselves to Him to pass on the Good News by word and deed.

( Peter stands and mimes to the crowd. )
 On the day of Pentecost, Peter, one of the twelve disciples, stood up to speak to the crowds in Jerusalem. At the end of his speech the people asked :
CrowdWhat shall we do to follow Jesus ?
PeterEach one of you must turn away from your sins and be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ; so that your sins will be forgiven; and you will receive God's gift, the Holy Spirit.
( Some of the actors kneel as an indication of accepting Jesus. )
LeaderThree thousand believed that day. Imagine two disciples talking together on the next day -
Disciple 1Isn't it exciting what God is doing now ?
Disciple 2Yes, I can't believe how things have changed, last week I was so scared, but now....
Disciple 1God is really doing amazing things and has given us such joy !
Disciple 2Where will it all lead ?
Disciple 1I can't wait to see what God will do next !
PeterWe place this symbol on the tree to remind us of the importance of the first disciples in beginning the Christian church.
( Disciple 2 shows symbol to the people then Tree Attendant puts it on the tree;

Tree operator raises tree;

Disciple 1 takes a torch candle from the altar and turns it on; Peter, Disciple 1 and Disciple 2  go to light their lights as the play continues. )
Leader - and so the disciples carried the light to the early church.
ALL"Don't let the light of Jesus grow dim, pass it on", is the cry !
Disciple 1 returns the torch candle to the altar as the performance continues.

II : PAUL

LeaderThis is the story of PAUL.

Paul, and others, tried to destroy the new church, they went from house to house, dragging out the believers and throwing them into jail.

( Two members of the crowd get hustled to jail by Paul and his men. )
 Then Paul went storming off to Damascus to arrest the believers there.
( Paul's men cross towards overhead projector, Paul in front. )
 Suddenly a light shone from heaven. Paul fell to the ground.( Paul falls to the ground. )
GodPaul, why do you persecute me ?
PaulWho are you, Lord ?
GodI am Jesus whom you persecute. Get up and go into Damascus where you will be told what to do.
( Paul is helped up and taken into Damascus by his men, nearer to the overhead projector. )
LeaderGod then began to change Paul and in later years Paul travelled to many Mediterranean towns telling others about Jesus. He was eventually imprisoned in Rome and wrote many letters to the churches he had established. Parts of these letters can be found in the Bible.
PaulWe place this symbol on the tree to remind us of the many journeys Paul took and the letters he wrote that we still read today.
( Helper shows symbol to the people then Tree Attendant places it on the tree;

Tree operator raises tree;

Helper takes a torch candle, turns it on, and gives it to Paul; Paul's men, with Paul in front, go to light their lights. )

Leader - and so St Paul carried the light to the Roman empire.
ALL"Don't let the light of Jesus grow dim, pass it on", is the cry !
Paul or Helper returns the torch candle to the altar as the performance continues.

III : SOLDIERS

LeaderThis is the story of PERSECUTION IN ROME.

As Christianity spread throughout the Mediterranean area and further afield, so did persecution.

( Four soldiers march from the front of the altar, around the altar rail in front of the rail, and back behind the altar rail; when they come behind the rail, six hiders scatter to the sides to hide. )
 In Rome the persecution became so harsh that meetings were held in the catacombs, and as the persecution increased people took refuge permanently in these caves.
SoldierWe place this symbol on the tree to remind us of those who have been persecuted or have died because of their faith in Jesus.
( A soldier shows the symbol to the people, then Tree Attendant places it on the tree;

Tree operator raises tree;

One soldier takes the torch candle and turns it on, the soldiers march to light their lights, led by the soldier with the torch candle. )

Leader - and so the martyrs carried the light through the time of persecution.
ALL"Don't let the light of Jesus grow dim, pass it on", is the cry !
Soldier returns the torch candle to the altar as the performance continues.

IV : AUGUSTINE

LeaderThis is the story of St AUGUSTINE of Canterbury.

Augustine, after whom this church is named, lived in Rome at the end of the 6th Century, while Gregory was the Pope.

GregoryAugustine, I want you to take a group of monks on a mission to Canterbury in South East England, which is still a pagan area.
AugustineWho ? me ? - I don't want to go to that awful country. Can't someone else go ?
GregoryI believe it is your mission to go.
AugustineWell if you insist, I suppose I'll have to go, but I don't want to go.
( Augustine and his helpers move towards "France", and back again. )
LeaderAugustine and his group set off from Rome for England, on the journey they heard all sorts of rumours about England. They definitely didn't want to go. By the time they reached France they had had enough, so Augustine turned back to Rome, and had another interview with Pope Gregory.
AugustineNo, we just can't do it. We're too scared.
GregoryYes, you can - see, I have written letters of introduction for you to take with you. I'm sure it will be all right.
AugustineIf you insist, we will trust ourselves to God. He will be our helper.
( Augustine and two helpers go via France to England. )
LeaderThe group eventually arrive in England and manage to establish a church in Canterbury, which is still flourishing today.
AugustineWe place this symbol on the tree to remind us that although following Jesus can be scary, He will give us the strength to win through.
( One of Augustine's helpers shows symbol to the people then Tree Attendant places it on the tree;

Tree operator raises tree;

The other helper takes the torch candle and turns it on; Augustine and the two helpers go to light their lights, the torch-bearer in front. )

Leader - and so St Augustine carried the light to Britain.
ALL"Don't let the light of Jesus grow dim, pass it on", is the cry !
Helper returns the torch candle to the altar as the performance continues.

V : SAMUEL MARSDEN

LeaderThis is the story of SAMUEL MARSDEN.
( Samuel Marsden and two followers move to altar rail. )
 Over the centuries many people told their friends, their neighbours and others about Jesus. Others travelled to foreign places to spread the Good News. In the 19th Century, Samuel Marsden and others arrived in New Zealand to tell the people here about Jesus. The story is told in the following Hymn.
LeaderPlease stand to sing the Carol :

Te Harinui

( During this hymn the actors at the back return to the front by the altar rail. )
Omitted for copyright reasons; further details.
LeaderPlease sit for the second play.

Everyone can pass on the Light

( Actors except Samuel and followers replace candles on altar and stand in front of the altar, behind Samuel and followers. )
SamuelWe place this symbol on the tree to thank God for the many different tribes and nations who have heard the Good News of Jesus and responded to it.
( One Samuel follower shows symbol to the people then Tree Attendant places it on the tree;

Tree operator raises tree;

The other follower takes the torch candle and turns it on, Samuel and the two followers go to light their lights, the torch-bearer in front. )

Leader - and so Samuel Marsden carried the light to New Zealand.
ALL"Don't let the light of Jesus grow dim, pass it on", is the cry !
Follower returns the torch candle to the altar as the performance continues.

VI : THE SPREAD OF THE GOSPEL THROUGH THE MEDIA

( Crowd - all actors who are near the altar - stand ready to mime actions. )
LeaderThis is the story of THE SPREAD OF THE GOSPEL THROUGH THE MEDIA.

Initially, Christianity was spread by word of mouth and by letters. Even after printing was invented, Bibles were expensive and therefore not available to everyone.

Nowadays with modern technology there are many ways for people to hear about Jesus. Millions of books about God are written and sold each year. ( crowd mime reading and passing the book on. ) The Bible has been a best seller for many years, and is now translated into hundreds of languages.

Radio ministries such as Radio Rhema and the Christian Broadcasting Association offer the Christian message ( crowd mime listening ).

Films, ( crowd mime filming ) videos and various television programmes ( crowd mime TV ) such as Shine TV also help to spread the message.

MimerWe place this symbol on the tree to remind us that the Good News of Jesus can be spread in many different ways.
( Mimer shows symbol to the people then Tree Attendant places it on the tree;

Tree operator raises tree;

Mimer takes the torch candle and turns it on; Mimer and two other members of the crowd go to light their lights in front. )

Leader - and so the media carry the light to all people.
ALL"Don't let the light of Jesus grow dim, pass it on", is the cry !
Mimer returns the torch candle to the altar as the performance continues.

VII : FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE

LeaderThis is the story of FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE - "THE LADY WITH THE LAMP".

The message of Jesus is not only spread by words. It is also spread by people's deeds.

Florence Nightingale - also known as The Lady with the Lamp - was someone who saw a need and acted upon it.

( Crowd sit or lie like wounded soldiers, Florence and three helpers move around them offering drinks and miming bandaging wounds. )
 Florence with a few helpers went out to the Crimea War and tried to help the thousands of wounded and dying soldiers. After each battle they would go out on to the battlefield, often at night, with their lamps, and offer what help they could.
FlorenceWe place this symbol on the tree to thank God for the health profession and for all who care for sick people.
( Florence Helper shows symbol to the people then Tree Attendant places it on the tree;

Tree operator raises tree;

Another Florence Helper takes the torch candle and turns it on, Florence and the three helpers go to light their lights with the torch-bearer in front. )

Leader - and so Florence Nightingale carried the light to the sick and dying.
ALL"Don't let the light of Jesus grow dim, pass it on", is the cry !
Florence helper returns the torch candle to the altar as the performance continues.

VIII : MOTHER TERESA

LeaderThis is the story of MOTHER TERESA

In recent years, Mother Teresa has captured the imagination of many people as she and her Missions of Charity work among the poor of Calcutta and throughout the world.

( Two visitors come towards Mother Teresa. )
Visitor 1Hello, we've brought a few things for your people. We won't come in, we're in a hurry.
Mother TeresaThank you for your gift. I'm sorry you won't come in.
Visitor 1Is there anything else you need that we could bring next time we're passing this way ?
Mother TeresaWe are always needing many things, but what we need most is people's time. If only you could stop for a few moments next time and play with one of the children, or sit with someone who is sick. Time is the most precious gift you can give to our people.
Visitor 1Oh, time - well - we're on our way to play bridge just now, our days are so busy. Maybe one day we'll find time to come in ( wandering off ). Time - no, there is no time to spare for those people.
Mother TeresaPeople don't understand about giving in God's way. Giving should come from the heart, be sacrificial, not just things, but involve our whole being. I do wish more would understand how to put love into their giving.
Pause
 We place this symbol on the tree to thank God for all who help those less fortunate than themselves.
( Visitor 1 shows symbol to the people then Tree Attendant places it on the tree;

Tree operator raises tree;

Visitor 2 takes the torch candle and turns it on, Mother Teresa and the Visitors go to light their lights, Visitor 2 in front. )

Leader - and so Mother Teresa carried the light to the poor and needy.
ALL"Don't let the light of Jesus grow dim, pass it on", is the cry !
Visitor 2 returns the torch candle to the altar as the performance continues.

IX : THE STARFISH

LeaderThis is the story of THE STARFISH,
adapted from a story by Charles de Lint.
( Two Throwers walk along in front of altar rails throwing starfish into the sea; Man comes along and catches up with them. )
LeaderAs a man walked the beach at dawn he noticed two people ahead of him, picking up starfish which had been left behind by the tide and flinging them into the sea.
ManWhy are you throwing starfish into the sea ?
1st ThrowerIf I don't do it they will all die when the morning sun reaches them.
ManDon't you know the beach goes on for miles and miles ? There are millions of starfish here. How can your efforts make a difference ?
2nd Thrower( Throwing a starfish into the sea ) It makes a world of difference to this one.
ManWe place this symbol on the tree to thank God for the many ways ordinary people can help one another.
( 2nd Thrower shows symbol to the people then Tree Attendant places it on the tree;

Tree operator raises tree;

1st Thrower takes the torch candle and turns it on; the Man and the two throwers go to light their lights, with the torchbearer in front. )

Leader - and so everyone can carry the light to others.
ALL"Don't let the light of Jesus grow dim, pass it on", is the cry !
1st Thrower returns the torch candle to the altar as the performance continues.
LeaderBefore singing the next hymn we will be handing out candles to you all - please be careful that little ones don't burn their fingers - we will then bring a candle to light the candle of the person at the end of each pew, then that person can light the candle next to them and so on.
( Organist plays tune whilst helpers hand out candles; Leader lights altar taper from altar candle; four other helpers collect tapers from front, wait by communion rail to light them from Leader's taper, then follow those distributing the candles, lighting the end candle on each pew. When all candles are lit - )
LeaderWe invite you to use the following hymn as a prayer to Jesus asking Him to help you to be more like him each day.

Please remain sitting for this hymn :

Jesus bids us shine ...

( Three pray-ers go up to lectern to be ready to read prayers, stay there until after The Lord's Prayer. )

1.   Jesus bids us shine with a pure, clear light,
  Like a little candle burning in the night :
  In this world of darkness, we must shine;
  You in your small corner, and I in mine.

2.   Jesus bids us shine first of all for Him;
  Well He sees and knows it if our light grows dim :
  He looks down from heaven to see us shine;
  You in your small corner, and I in mine.

3.   Jesus bids us shine, then, for all around;
  Many kinds of darkness in the world are found -
  Sin, and want, and sorrow; so we must shine;
  You in your small corner, and I in mine.

LeaderPlease sit or kneel for the prayers; at the end, we shall sing the Lord's Prayer.
Pray-er 1Thank you, Lord God, for the many millions of people who have helped spread Christianity throughout the world through the generations. Help us to pass the message on to those around us and to the next generation. Amen.
Prayer 2We pray for all those people who are part of the persecuted church today, asking that you will comfort and strengthen them in their time of need. Amen.
Prayer 3We rejoice at this Christmas season, praying for our families and loved ones that you may keep us in perfect peace and in unity one with another. Amen.
LeaderWe will now sing the Lord's Prayer.
ALL

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come,
Your will be done, on earth, as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the Kingdom, the power and the glory are Yours now and for ever. Amen.

Pause
LeaderPlease stand to sing the Carol :

Joy to the world
( during which a voluntary collection will be taken. )

1.   Joy to the world ! - the Lord is come !
  Let earth receive her King;
  Let every heart prepare Him room,
  And heav'n and nature sing,
  And heav'n and nature sing,
  And heav'n, and heav'n and nature sing.

2.   Joy to the world ! - the Saviour reigns !
  Let men their songs employ,
  While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains,
  Repeat the sounding joy,
  Repeat the sounding joy,
  Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

3.   He rules the world with truth and grace,
  And makes the nations prove
  The glories of His righteousness,
  And wonders of His love,
  And wonders of His love,
  And wonders, and wonders of His love.
